So, you’ve finally got down to the task of exploring Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, Colombo. This city definitely has a lot to offer in terms of retail experiences, city hotel stays and mainly the local street food scene. Here are some Sri Lankan street food dishes you ought to try.

Achcharu 

For those taking an afternoon stroll, exploring the ever-so-busy streets of Pettah, achcharu is your best companion for the day! You’ll find plenty of street hawkers selling a mix of tropical fruits cut into cubes with salt and chilli powder to taste.  Purchase a bowl of this for an on-the-go snack…beware…it’s quite sour and spicy!

Isso Wadey

The Galle Face Green, just 10 minutes away from Amari Colombo, is famous for street hawkers selling this yummy treat. Made with chickpeas and prawn, this is a delightful local favourite and is a must-try.

Hoppers

Are you in the mood for sweet, plain or egg? Hoppers are a wonderful evening snack is available at wayside shops on the street. This is also served at any hotel in Colombo for breakfast.

Murukku 

Now this snack is the easiest to find as it is available at supermarkets, little boutiques and even shops just dedicated to it. It is a crispy biscuit-like food made out of gram flour. It is often mixed with fried curry leaves and peanuts, which is a savoury murukku. There is also a sweet version called seeni murukku.
