Planning Your First Maldives Getaway: Tips for Navigating the Island Paradise

by Roland Lefevre

Everyone talks so highly of the Maldives, which is why it can feel a little overwhelming on your first visit. Where do you go? Which activities do you choose? This guide covers the basics you need to know to navigate this paradise archipelago just a little more smoothly.

Selecting Your Base

If you want a sense of Maldivian culture and the day-to-day, a bungalow or traditional stay on a local island is great. But if privacy, relaxation and indulgence are priorities, a private island resort like Niyama Private Islands Maldives won’t disappoint.

Timing Your Visit

The Maldives remains tropical year-round, but some seasons are better than others. The dry season from November to April is the most popular window, when the seas are calm, and the sun is out. But marine sightings are a tad better in the wet season from May to October.

Top Experiences

Snorkelling and diving are the top adventures at almost any Maldives luxury resort. You can also enjoy fishing excursions, sunset cruises, beach hopping adventures, and other water sports activities like kayaking, parasailing and paddleboarding.

Arrival & Transfers

Most international flights arrive at Male’s Velana International Airport. From there, you’ll need to reach your island via speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight. Make sure you book a flight that lands in Male before evening, as these transfers aren’t available at the end of the day.
